What are the symptoms of a toe, foot, or ankle fracture?

It is difficult to assess if an injury involves tendon, ligament, or bone involvement without specialist involvement. Some hints that tell us bone injury is present is swelling, presence of bruising, and difficulty walking. Swelling alone is not a factor in assessing whether or not there is a fracture because swelling could arise 24 to 36 hours after the injury and certain fractures cause minimal to no swelling at all. Bruising or hematoma formation in the skin or under the toenail is often associated with a broken foot, ankle or toe and should be brought to the attention of a specialist.

If there is any difficulty in stepping down on the affected foot then it is important to check with a specialist as you may have a fracture or a broken foot. In the office, Dr. Lobkova at Step Up Footcare utilizes an on premise digital X-Ray and or Ultrasound with immediate results.

HOW IS A TOE, Foot, and Ankle Fracture Treated?

Once an accurate diagnosis is determined, there is a treatment protocol that is set depending on the severity of the toe, foot or ankle fracture, the amount of mobility and pain present. Treatment protocol typically involves pain control, reduction of the fracture, immobilization, and advanced laser therapy. On rare occasions, surgical repair is advised. Following the treatment protocol set by Dr. Lobkova at Step Up Footcare helps patients return to normal activity in a safe and timely manner.

  • Reduction of the fracture: When necessary, reduction of fracture fragments refers to the manipulation of bones in order to place them in a better healing position under local anesthesia in the office.

  • Immobilization: Immobilization involves splinting the fracture fragments externally by wearing a splint or leg cast, walking boot, rigid shoe, or using crutches depending on the severity and stability of the fracture.

  • Advanced Laser Therapy: Laser Therapy stimulates the body’s own ability to restore function, reduce swelling, inflammation and pain in the broken foot, ankle, or toe while accelerating the fracture healing process.

  • Surgery: On rare occasions an ORIF (open reduction internal fixation) surgical procedure may be required.
